We’re going to talk about a console brand new PS5. You ever heard of it? All right, so I know a lot of you right now are like, oh, unsub, unsub. Geez, my consoles unsub. Hey, technically it’s an AMD small form factor PC with RDNA 2 and DDR5. Anyway, moving forward, no, we’re going to talk about today. It’s not a new concept, but it’s one that we’re going to go ahead and show on our channel because I know the amount of people that actually have consoles and stuff to watch this channel might benefit from this. We are going to talk about Can I upgrade the storage on my PS5? There have been tons of Blog on this, but not on this channel.
So today we are going to be doing that, and of course, this is through the help of our friends over at Corsair. They have sent over and sponsored today’s Blog by using an NP600 Pro LPX SSD. So this is a two-terabyte. If you’ve downloaded any games and installed them on any console in the last 10 years, you know how fast internal storage will go.

Why PS5 Storage Upgrades Matter
I remember I had a, what was it, I think it was like a 120 GB Xbox 360 and how fast that would fill up, and games have only gotten bigger ever since consoles moved on to the latest hardware, specifically the RDNA and AMD builds that you find inside PS5 now. Game sizes are massive, so having better storage is important.

Now, you can hook up external storage; however, putting a nice fast NVMe SSD in there, which does use PCIe Gen 4 inside of the PS5, and this one is up to 7100 MB/s sequential read and up to 6800 MB/s sequential write, means that this will allow you a huge amount of storage as well as a really fast experience.
So, there is an additional m.2 slot inside the PS5. I don’t know how many people are aware of that, but the nice thing about this having an actual m.2 slot inside of it means that you can just, and it’s easy to install. Can I upgrade the storage on my PS5? Yes, and it’s actually easier than you think.
System Update – The First Step
The days of having consoles be completely non-user friendly—Xbox 360 opening tool, anyone? Remember those days, how hard it was to actually open up an Xbox 360? Unless you just use a hammer like I did. It’s actually quite easy now; it’s tool-less to open the system. We’ll do a step-by-step guide today on how to do that, but before we can do that, we have to let you guys know some of the things that you have to think about. One, system update is very important.
This is a brand new out-of-the-box PS5. We are in version 1.0, which means we have to provide an update because there’s actually an update that came out for the PS5 that allows for expansion storage to be recognized and formatted because it must be formatted to work with the console.
Second of all, you need a low-profile M.2 cooler now. The cooler is one of those things I’m kind of interested in, like how well it actually works because there is a cover that will go on top of the cooler, and as soon as you cover that up, it’s like—Is the cooler doing anything? I don’t know.
Choosing the Right SSD for PS5
But if you get an M.2 that has a pre-installed, standard-height cooler, it’s not going to clear the cover, and we’ll show you that once we get inside the unit. So, a low-profile cooler attached to an M.2 PCIe Gen 4 drive is going to be very important for this.
Now, I do also have my iFixit kit; even if I wasn’t working on this, I’d still have my iFixit kit on me, using that to open up the M.2 drive cover itself. So, before we get in there, let’s do the most boring part, which is get our updates going, and we will be back here in about 73 minutes.
You know, I’m going to be honest with you—as somebody that has not had a PlayStation since like PS2 and has had Xbox ever since—I’m really impressed with how fast Sony downloads and applies updates, whereas Xbox, I feel like it’s just out on coffee break. You know, good old Microsoft servers. Anyway, moving on.
Checking Available Storage
Check system software update settings. We’ve updated and are up to date, so now we will have the software that will allow us to be able to expand our storage. Speaking of storage, I’ll show you why this is important. If we go to storage, you’ll see 667.2 GB with 649.2 GB free.
You can see why expanding your storage to a two-terabyte or even an additional one-terabyte would make a massive difference for your gaming experience here on a PS5. Can I upgrade the storage on my PS5? Absolutely, especially if you’re running low on space like this example shows.
Installing the NVMe SSD
So let me go ahead and turn this off. How do you turn it off? There you go here. How do you turn the thing? What? What is ray of light? All right, so let’s go and take a look at our MP600 LPX. I’ve put these in quite a few systems of mine, but I’ve never actually installed these or the LPX version.
So this would also do a great job on a computer that needs extra clearance for the M.2. Sometimes you don’t have those covers that are part of the motherboard and they go right under a graphics card or something; you have a tall cooler—it could interfere with some graphics cards—so the LPX would actually fit the scenario perfectly for a situation like that.
So not just consoles, but obviously anything where standard or the height of the cooler is really important. Plus, it’s pre-installed, so thermal pads and everything are already in there.
Step-by-Step Installation Process
Open up the PlayStation—this is so much nicer than back in the day when we would have special tools required for a 360. You need to lift up on this corner. So here’s the drive: lift up on the corner opposite of the drive while pushing down that way, and it comes right off. I mean, here’s the M.2 storage drive right there. Or I should say expansion slot right there.
See how easy it is to access this. So to take this off, using my iFixit here with my Phillips screwdriver, long screw right there, set that aside, and pull this cover off. It’d be a lot easier if I had fingernails. So this cooler, or this cover, is why the low-profile cooler is important.
Testing and Formatting the Drive
To be honest though, I’m not entirely sure how effective it is with this cover on there—the cooler, I should say—because there’s no ventilation in here, no perforations, no openings; it’s completely sealed off. But if we take a look right here, we’ve got a screw currently set to the 110 location.
Now this is millimeters right here. This is an A/B drive, so we’re going to have to move the screw and the standoff over to the 80. As you can see here, it supports 30, 40, 60, 80, and 100. Take your drive, align the notch, push it in, and secure it.
Once installed, snap everything back in place. Turn the PS5 on and it should recognize the new drive immediately. This is where Can I upgrade the storage on my PS5? gets a practical answer—yes, and here’s proof.

Final Thoughts
We are now installed and expanded. You know what else is expanded? My waistline over the years—two terabytes worth. As soon as the PS5 boots, it formats the SSD for use.
Note: screenshots, save files, and Blog clips still stay on the main system drive; the SSD is for game installs. And that’s it—you’ve just upgraded your PS5 storage. Can I upgrade the storage on my PS5? Without a doubt, and you can too.
