For almost twenty years, a new Call of Duty release felt like a major cultural moment. Midnight launches, packed multiplayer lobbies, and explosive excitement defined every new entry. But this year, something has changed. One of the biggest Call of Duty releases in recent history launched last week, and many players were left wondering if anything significant had actually happened. Even people actively playing the game admitted it didn’t feel like the arrival of a major blockbuster.
This silence around the launch signals a bigger issue: Call of Duty might finally be vulnerable. And for the first time in years, Battlefield could be the franchise poised to take advantage.
The Quietest Call of Duty Launch in Years

Many long-time fans who jumped into the latest Call of Duty noticed a striking lack of enthusiasm. Major game launches once dominated the gaming conversation for weeks, but this release came and went with barely any impact.
The data backs this up. Steam charts clearly show a declining trend. Modern Warfare 3 peaked near 190,000 players, Black Ops 6 saw excitement rise to about 315,000, and Black Ops 7 is struggling to hit even 100,000 concurrent players. Meanwhile, Battlefield 6 launched with more than 700,000 players on Steam and continues to maintain a strong player base weeks after release.
Call of Duty still performs well on consoles, especially among PlayStation and Xbox users, but the shrinking PC presence is impossible to ignore. Battlefield, on the other hand, is gaining momentum at exactly the right time.
“Too Big to Fail?” Inside Comments That Aged Poorly

According to Insider Gaming, Activision leadership believes Call of Duty is “too big to fail.” They have reportedly already scheduled annual releases for the next four years. But the gaming market is changing faster than the franchise is adapting.
Recent Call of Duty releases feel repetitive, predictable, and overly safe. Players are not excited anymore because the formula is no longer evolving in meaningful ways. Battlefield took a risk by returning to a serious, grounded military tone without celebrity crossovers or cartoon-style operators. That choice is paying off as players crave authenticity again.
The Money Problem: COD’s Budget Is Out of Control

During the Microsoft–Activision acquisition, court documents revealed shocking development budgets for recent Call of Duty titles. Black Ops 3 cost $450 million to develop. Modern Warfare 2019 rose to $640 million, and Black Ops Cold War reached $700 million. These budgets have continued to climb as game development becomes more expensive.
However, while budgets rise, sales are showing early signs of decline. Call of Duty can justify a massive budget when it sells more than 40 million copies, as Modern Warfare 2019 did. But if Battlefield outsells or even matches Call of Duty while operating with a smaller budget, it raises major concerns for Activision and Microsoft.
Black Ops 7 Feels Like a “Phoned-In” Release
Players have repeatedly expressed that Black Ops 7 feels rushed and nearly identical to Black Ops 6. Much of the gameplay, structure, and mechanics appear copy-pasted, with only minimal changes or innovations introduced.
Even features that were marketed heavily, such as omni-movement, are barely used because they add little value to actual gameplay strategy. This has created a perception that development relied on recycled assets and safe design rather than creative risk-taking.
This is especially noticeable when the franchise now leans heavily toward pop-culture crossovers rather than the grounded tone it once embraced.
Battlefield Seizes the Opportunity
After Battlefield 2042’s disastrous launch, many believed the franchise was beyond recovery. Instead, DICE listened to players and returned to the fundamentals that made Battlefield popular in the first place. Battlefield 6 is grounded, polished, and focused on realistic military action. It launched in a much more complete state than expected, and the player response has been overwhelmingly positive.
Suddenly, Battlefield is not just surviving. It is competing. And in several key areas, it is outperforming Call of Duty for the first time in years. Steam player counts, early sales figures, and community sentiment all suggest a major shift.
Why COD Is at a Crossroads in 2025
For years, Call of Duty experimented with different time periods and distinct gameplay concepts. It swung between futuristic warfare, World War II settings, and modern conflicts, offering variety and excitement. Recently, however, the franchise has fallen into a predictable loop of alternating between Modern Warfare and Black Ops titles. The creativity and risk-taking have disappeared.
The franchise needs a real reset. A new engine, a bold direction, or a completely fresh concept may be required to reignite fan passion. Until then, Battlefield has a real opportunity to fill the void.
Is Call of Duty Actually in Trouble?
Call of Duty is not dying, but for the first time in a long time, it is showing signs of vulnerability. Sales trends, player fatigue, and side-by-side competition all point to a franchise that has lost the dominance it once enjoyed. In 2023, Call of Duty did not even claim the top-selling game of the year, losing to Hogwarts Legacy. Black Ops 7 may become one of the franchise’s weakest launches. Battlefield is experiencing a resurgence right when Call of Duty is struggling to maintain momentum.
The brand is now running on legacy rather than innovation, and many players have taken notice.
Final Thoughts: The Military Shooter Throne Is Up for Grabs
Call of Duty still has tremendous influence, but 2025 may become the franchise’s biggest wake-up call. Players want grounded combat, meaningful progression, and a serious tone. Battlefield understood that and delivered. Call of Duty did not. If Activision continues down the same path of safe annual releases and meme-driven content, Battlefield could officially reclaim the title of top military shooter. For the first time in a decade, the competition is real, and fans are watching closely.
