Endless Debate: Xbox vs PS5 Generational Wars
This debate on whether PlayStation or Xbox is better has been going on for years. Recently, we made a video comparing Xbox Series S and PlayStation 4, and people said that was unfair. They pointed out it was a current-gen console vs an old-gen one. We made it only because you requested it. But the comments were divided, and some even called me biased.
Key Points:
- Series S vs PS4 wasn’t a fair fight.
- Fans strongly defend their favorite console.
- Video was made on audience request.
- Many perceived bias in the review.
- The topic remains highly polarizing.
Clarifying the Real Differences
Everyone has their opinion, but in this video I’ll be clearer on the actual advantages of each console. I had explained some of these in the earlier video too, but many didn’t understand. That’s okay – the video still received a great response. The real console battle is between Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Xbox Series S acts like the younger sibling in this console war.
Key Points:
- The focus is on current-gen consoles.
- Xbox Series X vs PS5 is the real comparison.
- Series S is more of an entry-level option.
- Previous confusion will be cleared here.
- Audience appreciated the last video.
Hardware, Specs & Performance Breakdown
We’ve reviewed Xbox Series X earlier. The main difference between Series S and Series X is the performance level. Series S supports 1440p while Series X delivers true 4K gaming. Aside from this, the OS and interface across both are almost the same. They offer the same gaming experience, just with different power levels.
Key Points:
- Series S = 1440p, Series X = 4K.
- User interface is identical in both.
- Core gaming experience remains the same.
- Series X is significantly more powerful.
- Series S targets budget gamers.
Design: Form Factor of Consoles
Design-wise, both consoles have unique appeal. Xbox looks like a compact symmetrical brick, whereas PS5 is curvy and unconventional. The PS5’s design is polarizing – some find it ugly, others futuristic. The disc drive is separate, and the port layout is spread between front and back. PS5’s bold design still excites people today.
Key Points:
- Xbox follows a minimal block design.
- PS5 has a futuristic, bold aesthetic.
- PS5 disc version is asymmetrical.
- Xbox design feels more traditional.
- Both can be placed horizontally or vertically.

Portability & Design Stand-Off
PS5 requires a stand if you want to place it horizontally. PS5 Slim doesn’t include the stand in the box, unlike the original. Both PS5 variants perform the same, there’s no difference in specs. We’ve made a dedicated “PlayStation 5 in 2024” video about this topic. It explains the Slim’s advantages and limitations well.
Key Points:
- No major performance gap between models.
- PS5 Slim requires separate accessories.
- Slim design increases portability.
- Horizontal placement needs adapters.
- Reference video is available for clarity.
Portability & Carrying Convenience
Xbox Series S is the most portable among all. Even PS5 Slim is fairly portable and fits in most bags. PS5 Fat is bulky but still manageable for travel. Xbox Series X, however, is heavy and difficult to pack. Your traveling style will decide which one suits you better.
Key Points:
- Series S is ideal for travelers.
- PS5 Slim is a portable upgrade.
- Xbox Series X is less travel-friendly.
- Portability varies by user lifestyle.
- Slim and S are best for on-the-go use.
Pricing & Variants – Which Is Budget-Friendly?
Xbox Series S (512GB) is priced at ₹33,000 while the 1TB Black Edition goes for ₹39,000. Series X typically ranges between ₹50,000–₹55,000, though you might find deals as low as ₹45,000. PS5 has four major variants – all have fixed specs with no custom options. You can’t customize anything – just choose the version you want.
Key Points:
- Series S is the cheapest new-gen console.
- Xbox pricing is better value-for-money.
- PS5 offers more variant options.
- Series X pricing fluctuates with stock.
- No customization available on PS5.
Resolution & Gaming Performance
PS5 often runs at 1440p despite 4K being labeled on the box. Xbox Series X offers native 4K at 120Hz and even 8K support if you have the right setup. PS5 also runs 4K 120Hz and shows 8K on the box, but it doesn’t support native 8K yet. Both support great HDR and visual fidelity with proper displays.
Key Points:
- Series X gives better true 4K output.
- PS5 and Xbox both support 120Hz.
- 8K support is mostly theoretical.
- Great performance with HDR TVs.
- Xbox slightly edges out in raw graphics.
Storage Breakdown & Usable Space
Series S comes with 500GB, but usable space is only around 360GB. Series X gives you 1TB, but after OS, about 820GB is usable. PS5 Fat offers ~625GB usable, while PS5 Slim gives around 825GB despite claiming 1TB. Always expect some storage to be taken by the OS and system files.
Key Points:
- Actual usable space is less than advertised.
- OS takes around 100–200GB on all consoles.
- Storage is a big factor in game libraries.
- PS5 Slim offers more usable space.
- Series X offers the most overall storage.
Storage Expansion: Pricey but Possible
Xbox offers proprietary expansion cards which are quite expensive – ₹15,000 for 1TB. PlayStation 5 allows NVMe SSDs that cost ₹10,000 but are universal. You can expand via USB too, but only old-gen games run from external drives. PS5 games must be transferred back to internal SSD to play.
Key Points:
- Xbox expansion is more costly.
- PS5 supports universal Gen4 SSDs.
- USB storage works only for older games.
- Internal SSD needed for PS5 games.
- Expansion flexibility is better on PS5.
OS & User Interface Experience
Xbox OS on both Series S and X is identical, with music themes and dynamic backgrounds depending on the game. It’s immersive and interactive. PS5’s UI is sleek and simple, but it lacks a built-in browser. Both support apps like YouTube, Netflix, Twitch, Spotify, etc.
Key Points:
- Xbox has themed music UI.
- PS5 offers a minimalistic interface.
- Multimedia support is solid on both.
- Xbox offers more in-UI engagement.
- Browser is missing on PS5.
Game Library & VR Advantage
PS5 offers 8500+ games with an additional 170+ PS VR2 games. Some titles repeat due to dual listings (PS4/PS5). PS VR2 could be available on PC soon, making it even more valuable. Xbox has fewer exclusives comparatively but still offers great options.
Key Points:
- PS5 has the largest game library.
- PS VR2 adds a new dimension.
- Xbox exclusives are fewer but decent.
- VR support is exclusive to PS5.
- Game count includes some repeats.
Exclusive Games: Who Wins?
PS5 exclusives include Spider-Man, God of War, Uncharted, and more – truly legendary titles. Xbox exclusives are playable on PC, so they aren’t really exclusive. For pure console gaming, PS5 wins easily. Many PS5 exclusives release on PC years later, so early access is a big plus.
Key Points:
- PS5 exclusives are highly acclaimed.
- Xbox exclusives appear on PC too.
- Early access is exclusive to PS5.
- Titles like God of War are unmatched.
- PS5 exclusives drive console sales.
Big Titles Like GTA 6 – Console Ready
GTA 6 will launch exclusively for Xbox Series S/X and PS5 for the first 1–2 years. PC will get it later, like GTA 5 and RDR2. So owning a console gives early access to the most hyped game. Both platforms are equally supported for such massive releases.
Key Points:
- GTA 6 will be console-first.
- Xbox and PS5 both get priority.
- PC users will wait longer.
- Console buyers benefit from exclusivity.
- Huge win for console gamers.
Backward Compatibility – Xbox Dominates
Xbox Series S/X supports Xbox 360, Xbox One, and even original titles. PlayStation 5 only supports PS4 titles in India. Older-gen PlayStation games require streaming via PS Now, which isn’t available in India. Xbox wins in terms of legacy game support.
Key Points:
- Xbox supports multiple past generations.
- PS5 supports only PS4 titles natively.
- PS Now is not available in India.
- Xbox uses native emulation tech.
- Xbox has true backward compatibility.
E-Sports Titles & High Refresh Rate Support
Both PS5 and Xbox Series X support 4K 120Hz gaming. Xbox Series S supports 1440p 120Hz. With a good monitor or high-end TV, you’ll enjoy top-tier esports gaming. Games like Fortnite, Warzone, Apex all run smoothly on both consoles.
Key Points:
- 120Hz gaming is supported on both.
- Series S supports 1440p high refresh.
- Top esports titles run on all consoles.
- Gaming monitors enhance experience.
- For Valorant/CS, PC is still required.
Native Keyboard and Mouse Support in Games
Some games support native keyboard and mouse input, so you can connect them and play comfortably.
Now comes the most debatable and controversial part of this video—performance or say, the gaming experience.
On paper, it’s true that Xbox Series X has more raw power than PS5.
But I had a doubt for a long time about how it actually feels to use the Xbox Series X.
Now that I have it, I tested two games—NFS Unbound and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla—on both consoles.
Real-World Testing and Game Performance
I tested both games side-by-side on a 65-inch TV and honestly, I couldn’t see any difference in resolution or frame rate.
NFS Unbound consistently ran at 60 FPS on both consoles without a dip in performance.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla had two modes—quality and high frame rate—and I tested the quality one.
I thought Xbox Series X would run at 4K60 on quality, but both consoles only managed 4K30 FPS.
On high frame rate mode, both ran at 4K60 FPS, but without an FPS meter, I couldn’t see much difference.
Comfort-Based Console Gaming & YouTube Comparisons
Gaming consoles are built for relaxing and enjoying games rather than measuring performance metrics.
In my experience, I didn’t notice any major difference in gaming feel between Xbox Series X and PS5.
There are a lot of side-by-side YouTube videos comparing both consoles without commentary, just gameplay.
Those videos help compare color and motion more visually but don’t explain experience well.
According to me, both provide nearly identical gaming experiences, despite what specs say.
Power on Paper vs Real-Use Scenarios
Yes, on paper, Xbox Series X is far more powerful than PS5 and may show advantages in future games.
But real-world usage doesn’t reveal a significant lead in current titles.
The biggest exclusive PlayStation advantage is PS VR2—virtual reality gaming, which Xbox doesn’t offer.
You don’t have to buy the PS VR2 headset with the console; you can buy it later.
It’s expensive but offers a next-level immersive experience, unmatched by Xbox right now.
PlayStation VR2 Experience and Pricing
PS VR2 is supported on PS5 and costs around ₹50,000–₹55,000, nearly the same as the PS5 itself.
Though pricey, the VR experience is like having another console altogether.
We’ve reviewed it on our channel and might revisit it in 2024 due to newly launched VR games.
If you enjoy VR gaming, PS VR2 is a fantastic investment.
Let me know in the comments if you’d like a fresh review video of PS VR2 soon.
Game Catalogs and Subscription Models
The game catalog on PS5 is loaded with strong AAA titles and changes regularly.
You can explore the titles online; all are available under the same membership.
Older games are replaced with new ones in the catalog; however, claimed games remain in your account.
Xbox, on the other hand, offers the Xbox Game Pass which also provides an incredible library.
The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs around ₹6,500/year and includes multiple great games.
Xbox Game Pass Flexibility and Steering Support
You can only play games from Xbox Game Pass library while they’re available in the catalog.
Once removed, you can no longer access them unless purchased.
Some steering wheels like Logitech G29 have native support on Xbox—great for racing games.
Avoid cheap imitation wheels—they’re just regular controllers with a different shape.
Real wheels like the G29 offer a next-level driving experience, and we plan to review it soon.
Controller Comparison and Immersive Feedback
Xbox controllers are premium with good haptics and hand-feel but don’t offer much innovation.
They do include trigger vibrations, but not adaptive triggers like PS5’s DualSense.
The vibration feedback in Xbox controllers adds to immersion but feels standard.
Meanwhile, the PS5 DualSense controller is next-level, offering different vibration types.
Sony’s focus on controller innovation gives PS5 a more immersive gameplay edge.
Using PS5 Controller on PC & Connectivity Hacks
To use the PS5 controller on a PC, you’ll need to use the Windows method for compatibility.
Fun fact: our channel’s first-ever video was about connecting the DualSense controller to PC.
However, keep in mind you can’t connect the console directly to the internet with certain methods.
If connected, the console logs out your profile and stops games from launching.
Still, these offline tricks help access more games at cheaper rates.
Warranty and Brand Reliability
Both consoles come with a standard 1-year warranty and are made by reliable brands—Sony and Microsoft.
There are usually no issues under warranty with either Xbox Series X or PS5.
This entire comparison covers Xbox Series X/S vs PlayStation 5, our current-gen consoles.
If you already have a powerful PC, that might be a better choice for you.
Building a PC with Xbox Series X-like performance will cost at least ₹1.5 lakhs.
Console Pricing and Value for Money
Xbox Series X is priced around ₹45,000—₹10,000 cheaper than the PS5.
Xbox Series S is even more affordable at ₹33,000, making it ₹10–12K cheaper than PS5 Digital Edition.
Right now, Xbox consoles offer amazing value for money and great performance.
If exclusive PlayStation titles don’t matter to you, Xbox is a great gaming option.
In the context of xbox vs playstation market share 2025, price and value may tilt in Xbox’s favor.
Final Thoughts: Which One to Choose?
If you don’t have a high-end PC, Xbox gives you next-level console gaming at a better price.
If you already own a good gaming PC, then either console might be redundant for you.
Choose based on your needs—more power, more exclusives, or more immersive experiences.
